Wine of the Month Club: Local Winery Brings a True Taste of Italy to SA with Ayama Vermentino

Ayama Vermentino

It’s time once again for Wine of the Month Club! I have sampled some delicious wines over the past few months and now I’m back, ready to introduce you to my favourite wine for April 2019 — Ayama Vermentino. This traditionally Italian varietal has found a home here in South Africa thanks to proud Italian owners of Slent Farm, Michela and Attilio Dalpiaz. Being the very first Vermentino to be grown and harvested in South Africa, this is a truly one-of-a-kind-wine, which is why it’s my must-try wine pick for this month!

The first official South African Vermentino harvest took place in 2016, accruing incredible local and international uptake. The second batch, released on Mandela Day, 18th of July 2018, is enjoying the same praise and excitement by wine lovers across the country and abroad.

Characterised by green almond, pear, white peach, lime and pink grapefruit zest, with subtle notes of crushed rock minerality and saltiness, a glass of classic Sardinia Vermentino is the perfect summer sipper. This dry wine pairs beautifully with a seafood curry but I think it really sings the most when enjoyed on its own on a sunny and warm autumn day. If you are looking for a unique taste, this is your wine and you will love it forever.

Limited with only, 5 350 750ml bottles, 100 magnums, 24 double magnums and 12 jeroboams, the 2017 vintage of this sensational wine is definitely an investment for wine lovers looking for something different. Bottled in a Burgundy-shaped bottle, the wine has been labelled by hand and features a white wax dipping covering the natural cork. It’s simply beautiful, making it a truly special gift for any wine lover.
