Wearable Winter Makeup Trends: Glowing Skin & Bright Lashes
While runway fashion and makeup trends created by the fashion and beauty industry are beautiful to look at, they can be a little out there for the everyday woman to attempt. But that doesn’t mean we can’t take inspiration from the experts. I’ve found some of the best budget-friendly products on South African shelves that can help you achieve this year’s fabulous winter makeup runway trends on a more low-key scale.
The Trend:
The Emilio Pucci Fall/Winter 2017/2018 fashion show immediately grabbed my attention amongst the masses at Milan Fashion Week for one reason, and one reason only: colour! It’s been a hot minute since I’ve seen that many clashing neon colours in one space (possibly since my grade 7 days, where “lumo” parties and rainbow leg warmers were a thing) and the 13-year-old girl inside of me was brought back to life! To correspond with the striking outfits, Inge Grognard – the makeup artist behind the scenes of the show – created thick, clumpy fluorescent lashes on the models while keeping the skin fresh and dewy. The combination of the clothing and makeup in the collection lent an almost 80s psychedelic vibe to the show – something which quickly became a winter trend.
While bright colours and winter don’t usually go together, when correctly executed; a hint of hue on the eye paired with naturally glowing features can look beautiful on anyone for an everyday wearable look. If you’d like to try it out, these products – tried and tested by yours truly – are perfect for looking like you just stepped off the runway!
Skin:
The aim here is fresh, natural, glowing skin, which can be achieved with a sheer-coverage base such as a BB or CC cream, or a low-coverage foundation.

If you’d like some additional coverage, then a light concealer over the top of your base should do the trick. Revlon ColorStay Concealer comes in four shades and tends to work for my olive-toned combination skin when I’m in need of a bit of soft coverage under the eyes or to cover blemishes and spots.

To add more to the glowing effect, the L.A. Girl Strobe Lite Strobing Powders are stunning for adding a natural luminescence to the skin. By dusting the strobing powder on the high points of your face, your skin will look fresh and young, and radiate dewiness. Lips:
With somewhat intense eyes, it’s better to keep the lips more neutral – like the Emilio Pucci models – with a simple lip balm, clear gloss or muted nude lipstick.
Brows:
With this look, the models’ brows were not over-dramatic or overly exaggerated but were simply brushed up neatly in a way that emphasised their natural shape and texture. However, not all of us are blessed with beautifully formed brows, so don’t be scared to do your brows in whichever way you feel comfortable if you’re attempting this trend. I would suggest setting your brows with a brow gel, like Maybelline’s Brow Drama Sculpting Brow Mascara, and brushing the hairs upwards to make them look naturally full.

Eyes:
What better way to frame the window of the soul than with brightly coloured mascara? The eyes are undoubtedly the focus of this look even when adapting the trend. Unlike on the runway, however, dramatic clumpy lashes are not always suitable for everyday wear. While some may think that coloured mascara is not for the faint of heart, wearing the look is easier than you’d think. Instead of focusing on thickening the lashes with colour, aim to simply add a pop of colour with a base of black mascara (it helps to add depth) and some pigment on the very tips. An easy way to do this, if you don’t have bright mascara on hand, is to use your favourite black mascara and run a brightly coloured liquid liner through the ends once it has dried. Try to experiment with different colour variations if you’re interested, as each eye colour is unique and may be complimented by another shade but following the rule of thumb these shades best complement certain eye colours:
– Shades of purple, cobalt blue, green and gold compliment brown, green and hazel eyes.
– Blue shades compliment blue eyes.
– Pink shades highlight the coolness of grey eyes.
