Top 5 Exciting New Food Products Hitting SA Grocery Shelves

After years of working as an Editor and writer for…
Innovation is the spice of life; especially when it comes to food. Fortunately, all sorts of new foodie products are hitting the grocery shop shelves this month — so let’s eat! Whether you’re looking for new drinks or healthier food options, there are plenty of new things to sip and sample this month. From locally grown almonds to tasty new yoghurt varieties, here are the foods we’re most excited to add to our shopping carts this October.
Al Monde locally grown almonds
Al Monde is giving consumers the chance to buy locally-grown almonds for less. A ZZ2 subsidiary, Cape Almonds has launched 50 tonnes of locally grown almonds in South Africa under the brand name, Al Monde. According to Cape Almonds, these locally grown nuts are fresher, crunchier, tastier, and more affordable than their imported counterparts. Plus, because they’re locally grown, consumers will have peace of mind that getting these nuts to the grocery shelves has incurred a considerably reduced carbon footprint.
Al Monde almonds are packed in boxes (sizes 250g, 500g, and 1kg) as well as in recycled plastic bags (100g and 250g). The Al Monde almonds are raw and are available at the National Fresh Produce Markets in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, and Cape Town.
Dan Coetzee, CEO of Cape Almonds, says the launch of local almonds in South Africa comes at a critical time. “Due to the oversupply of Almonds in the US, South Africa is getting flooded with cheap poor-quality stock. As an association, our main aim is to protect producers and the almond market as a whole and to ensure South Africans consumers get better quality local almonds at competitive prices.”

Absolute Zero and Almost Zero bubbly
It’s my absolute pleasure to introduce you to the Absolute Zero bubbly from the proudly South African, Van Loveren Family Vineyards… Now in a super convenient can! The sober curious movement has become an unstoppable trend and these gorgeous non-alcoholic bubbly options will make going alcohol-free so much easier this festive season.
This ‘Oct-sober’ discover a range of expertly crafted de-alcoholised wines from Van Loveren. My favourite is the Absolute Zero Brut and Absolute Zero Nectar bubbly in a can. Convenient and delicious, these single-serving bubbly options are great for a braai, sundowners on the beach, or anywhere you want a pop of festive hurrah, and some bubbles to toast to good times. Absolute Zero Brut is a deliciously dry sparkling wine with tiny festive bubbles, and crisp tropical flavours on the palate – well balanced with a smooth finish. Absolute Zero Nectar is a gorgeous sweet sparkling wine with tiny festive bubbles, luscious rich honey, fresh fruit, and nougat notes on the palate.
The full range is available online directly from the brand, including the cans. Selected Pick ‘n Pay’s, Checkers, Spar and Food Lover’s Market stores stock the range of bottles only.
Safari Vinegar premium range
We’re heading into the holiday season, when life centres around good times and celebrations with family and friends. Summer salads, sizzling braais, special desserts, party pleasers and festive feasts will be the order of the day. With the festive season on our doorstep, it’s a great time to discover Safari Vinegar’s premium range. Often the secret ingredient in a sensational salad dressing, a meaty marinade, a vegetable bake and even desserts and baking, vinegar is an essential pantry must-have.
The Safari Vinegar Balsamic and Organic Wine Vinegar premium range features five home-grown, locally made and bottled options:
- Cape Balsamic Vinegar, Cape Apple Balsamic Vinegar and Cape Rosa Balsamic Vinegar are the ideal vinegars to use for special occasion foods. Over the festive season, use in glazes, pair with crusty breads, serve with cheeseboards and drizzle over fresh summer fruits.
- The Safari Organic Wine Vinegar options are Organic Red Wine Vinegar and Organic White Wine Vinegar made from 100% organically-certified local grapes. Flavoursome and versatile, these everyday vinegars are perfect for salads, marinades, vegetarian dishes and glazes. The red wine option pairs well with red meats and flavourful vegetables, while the white wine vinegar is ideal for chicken and fish dishes, and pickling brine.
- Safari Organic Apple Cider Vinegar range is a natural choice for those who are committed to a healthy lifestyle. Apple cider vinegar is renowned for its therapeutic properties. Offering a different, somewhat milder flavour profile, use the organic Apple Cider Vinegars to boost your smoothie, or add a dash to your refreshing homemade summer drinks. It’s also great culinary vinegar suited to all types of cooking. The range includes Organic Apple Cider Vinegar infused with Honey and Ginger. Both options are made only from organically-certified apples grown in the Elgin Valley.
