A Giant, 304m Water Slide Is Coming to South Africa This Summer!

After years of working as an Editor and writer for…
Attention adrenaline junkies and water babies; something big is heading our way and you won’t want to miss it. It involves fun, excitement and a 304-metre water slide! That’s right everyone, we will soon be welcoming the oh-so-awesome Slide The City to our shores for the first time and I for one cannot wait! I’ve got all the details you need to know about this epic arrival in December.
Slide The City, one of the longest commercial water slides in the world, will arrive in SA this coming summer to entertain and delight thousands of city dwellers. The slide will be set up in the middle of some of South Africa’s biggest cities to allow visitors to hop onto inflatables and slip and slide their way across three blocks in their city. The super impressive slide will visit a total of seven cities in South Africa from December through to February with tickets being released on 1 September 2015. According to the Slide the City Facebook page, sliders can expect to see the mega slide in Joburg, Pretoria, Knysna, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and more.
The 304m-long slide will allow visitors to slide down a 12 – 45 metre incline (depending on the incline of the street) at high speeds and ends with pool that is 26m long. With three lanes to allow for multiple sliders, the slide will be able to cater for large groups on any given day.
I was also impressed to hear that the organiser are committed to sustainable practices and responsible water use and so will be using potable water for the slide. In addition to that, the slide has been custom designed to use less water and water will be treated and recirculated along the slide. It will also be chlorinated and re-used in the city after the event.
Of course, along with the slide, visitors will have access to food, music and other activities on the day of their visit, making it a fabulous day out for the whole family. Sponsored by Nedbank and brought to you by You Magazine, Huisgenoot and Drum, Slide the City is set to be an event to remember.
Dates: Slide the City will be in Port Elizabeth on 12 and 13 December 2015, Knysna on 16 December 2015, Cape Town on 19 and 20 December 2015 as well as 6 and Febuary 2016, Balitto and Stanger (KZN) on 9 and 10 January 2016, Pretoria on 16 and 17 January 2016, Johannesburg on 23 and 24 January 2016, and Bloemfontein on 30 and 31 January 2015.
Tickets to Slide the City are priced at R99 for a single slide, R250 for 3 slides, and R490 to slide the whole day. Ticket prices include an inflatable tube per person. Tickets are available from Computicket.
For more information visit the Slide the City website.
*UPDATE 15 NOVEMBER 2015: SLIDE THE CITY POSTPONED *
Huisgenoot, YOU and Drum have announced that Slide the City events will no longer take place in 2015 in light of one of South Africa’s driest seasons in recent years. People who have bought tickets can hold onto theirs until a new date is announced or get an immediate refund.
