SA Architect Brings First Concrete Sunglasses to Market

Concrete sunglasses

You might boast some snazzy pairs of shades in your collection – but it’s highly unlikely you’ve got a pair that are anything like these. These concrete sunglasses, designed by South African architect Handre de la Rey, will be the first concrete-based sunglasses available to the consumer market.

The project to design them is dubbed CS Project, and was undertaken when de la Rey won the PPC Imaginarium design award for innovative and creative applications of concrete as a design material.

The sunglasses have been limited to a 1,000-unit product set, where each pair is carefully hand-crafted and bears its sequential production number. The production process utilises conventional clay moulding techniques, after which the components are sanded and covered in a silicon skin to prevent any potential breakage.

The material isn’t the only unconventional thing about these sunglasses – the rounded shape of the lenses juxtaposes well with the angular and minimalist design of the arms – but make sure the striking design matches your face shape before you set out to grab a pair.
