Review: Soothe Very Dry & Sensitive Atopic Skin with Bioderma’s Atoderm Range for the Body

Bioderma Atoderm

Finding the right products to treat very dry, sensitive skin or atopic skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis, can be incredibly difficult. When your skin is feeling sensitive and irritated the last thing you want to do is start testing out new products that could irritate it further. Even worse, there aren’t many brands that offer a full-body solution, so you end up using products from multiple different brands just to keep a handle on your symptoms. Luckily for those struggling with highly reactive and dry skin, Bioderma offers an all-in-one solution with the Atoderm Range. Designed to be used on the face and body, this full range of cleansing and care products is tailored to dry, very dry or atopic (eczema-prone) skin, offering instant relief and long-term results.

I struggle with dry skin and psoriasis and this range has been an incredible discovery for me, especially during the winter months when I usually experience psoriasis flare-ups on my legs and arms. Featuring 12 products, Bioderma’s Atoderm range is ideal for tackling winter skin woes and dry skin flare-ups. For skin lacking moisture and lipids, Atoderm restores the hydrolipidic film biologically (and lastingly), thanks to its dermo-patented formulas with SkinBarrier Therapy, while the Skin Protect Complex stimulates the skin to create its own hyaluronic acid and rebuild its barrier function.

Bioderma Atoderm Tried and Tested:

I tried 5 of the products from this range including the Atoderm SOS Spray, Ultra Soothing Balm, Ultra-Soothing Foaming Gel, Ultra Repair hand and nail cream, and Restorative Lip Balm.

Bioderma Atoderm SOS Spray

I love to use the Atoderm SOS Spray for instant relief. This anti-itching, ultra-soothing spray can be used to treat frequent or temporary itching caused by eczema and psoriasis and is a lifesaver when you have a few itchy spots that just won’t quit. It’s also ideal to treat and soothe itchy skin when you have an allergic reaction to something. It’s worked wonders on my itchy psoriasis breakout spots this winter (providing relief for up to 6 hours!) and even saved me in a pinch when I had an allergic reaction on my legs while on holiday in February this year. While it’s not designed for this purpose, I’ve even used the spray to soothe psoriasis itching on my scalp and it’s helped to give some relief in between shampooing.

Of all the products in the range, this spray has been the biggest game-changer for me. It has a lightweight texture and it gives you an immediate sensation of coolness when applied. The spray can be applied to both the face and body and is safe to use on adults, children, and even babies. Available in a 50ml travel size can (R160) and a 200ml can (R320), I never leave home without a bottle of this stuff in my handbag these days.

Bioderma Atoderm Lip balm
The Atoderm Restorative Lip Balm (R109.95) and Ultra Repair hand and nail cream (R119.95) have also proved to be real winners for the winter season. The lip balm is a daily moisturising treatment that soothes, nourishes and repairs damaged lips while also shielding lips from external stress. The balm has a rich texture and has been just the thing I was looking for to protect my lips during chilly winter morning walks.

As for the hand cream, this is one of my new favourite hand creams for winter. This nourishing hand cream works to calm and protect very dry, winter-damaged hands and nails for hours. It’s been such a treat to use during the Covid-19 lockdown too as it provides a long-lasting glove effect to help prevent skin drying out with frequent hand washing. What’s more, it also helps to strengthen nails with frequent use!

A match made in Heaven

Using the Ultra-Soothing Foaming Gel (R249.95) and Ultra Soothing Balm (R310.95) in combination is the best way to help get long-term relief from dry, irritated, and sensitive skin. The gentle anti-itching, purifying cleansing gel for face and body works to soothe sensations of discomfort and irritation while cleansing and protecting from cutaneous (skin) dryness. Designed to respect the skin’s natural balance, this cleanser won’t strip your skin of the good oils it needs. It’s also soap-free and unfragranced making it suitable for people with very dry, itchy, and atopic skin. I love using this cleanser on my whole body as it’s ultra-gentle and doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight and dry after cleansing. This cleanser is so gentle it can even be used on new-born babies!

After cleansing with the foaming gel, I follow up with the Ultra-soothing Balm to give my skin some extra tender loving care. The intensively anti-itching, ultra-nourishing balm has proved to be a real blessing for my skin. It’s great to apply as a spot treatment when my skin feels itchy or as an all-over moisturiser after cleansing my face and body. It’s fast-acting and significantly calms the discomfort of irritation and itching while also providing long-lasting relief. The non-oily, fast-absorbing texture makes it a pleasure to use morning and night, as I don’t have to wait for the cream to soak in before getting dressed. I’ve been using the balm for the last couple of weeks and it’s not only helped to soothe psoriasis spots on my legs but it’s helped treat them to the point of remission again.

Bioderma Atoderm Soothing Gel

Based on my experience with the above products in the Atoderm range I would highly recommend these products and the rest of the range to anyone struggling with atopic skin conditions or very dry skin during the winter months. The products keep all their promises mentioned on the packaging.

It’s quite a large range, so to make it easier to find the products that are right for your skin, Bioderma has used different lid colours throughout the Atoderm range. The blue lids are for normal to dry skin while the products with white lids are for very dry to atopic skin.
