Review: Express Yourself with the Logitech G733 Lightspeed Wireless Gaming Headset
Any gamer will tell you that wearing the right headset can make a huge difference to your gaming experience. If you live in a house with other people, it’s the best way to get a truly immersive game audio experience without disturbing your family and friends. And yes sure, investing in a good gaming headset with crisp, clear sound and all the right features is important, but wouldn’t it be nice if they looked cool and let you show off your personality a little too? Enter Logitech’s newest addition to its gaming peripherals lineup — the Logitech G733 Lightspeed.
Spice up your life
This wireless RGB headset is brilliant for anyone who hates cables (*puts up hand*). It looks fantastic, and the design is sleek and futuristic. What’s more, it’s available in a range of super snazzy colour options including white, black, blue, and lilac. Adding to the super fun colour options is a customisable suspension headband. The colourful headstrap is adjustable, removable, reversible, and interchangeable; allowing you to adjust its position for a better fit and switch it out for another colour to add a touch of customisation to your headset.
The headbands are available to buy separately in five different colours including black, lime, purple, mint, and orange. The lilac review unit I tested came with the lime headband, but I love that it’s possible to change up the look with a contrasting orange or matching purple band when the mood strikes. If, like me, you love to personalise almost anything and everything, then these will be right up your alley. Of course, the headband doesn’t just look cool, it also provides a great amount of cushioning to allow for extended use with no fatigue.
But the possibilities for customisation don’t stop there. The headset also offers you a chance to express yourself with a bunch of different RGB lighting options. The RBG LEDs are located on the front of the headset and are fully customisable. Glasses-wearers like me may find that with the RGB located on the front you do get a bit of a reflection of the lighting on your lenses, but it wasn’t anything super intrusive and or distracting for me.
The headset’s software gives you loads of options to customise the RBG lighting strips too. The LED strips have two lighting zones which allow you to do cool stuff like set the top half to be a different colour from the bottom half, or set the top half to have a different lighting effect to the bottom half. You can also adjust the speed of each effect and the brightness. What’s more, if you also own a Logitech G RGB mouse or keyboard, you can sync your lighting effects across several Logitech G products and shine on like the little ball of fire and personality you are.
Comfort and fit
The customisation features are extremely varied, which is great, but, of course, comfort is the most important thing in any gaming headset. The great news is that the Logitech G733 headset is extremely comfy. In fact, it’s the most comfortable headset I’ve ever worn. It’s lightweight (weighing just 278 grams) and the headband suspension system works well to give you a good, snug and comfortable fit without squeezing your head. The ear cups slide up and down to accommodate different head sizes and ensure your headset is sitting just right.
The standout comfort feature for me in the G733 is the ear cushions. The ear cushions are made from fabric which is a big plus for me. I definitely prefer fabric ear cushions as they don’t get overly hot as leatherette does. Fabric also tends to be a lot tougher and doesn’t wear down or fray like other options do. The ear cushions have dual-layer memory foam padding that conforms to your head, and they fit over your ears, not on your ears, so they feel beyond soft and comfortable even after hours of wear. I’ve worn these for 5-plus hours with no discomfort at all, which is only a positive if you prefer to concentrate on the task at hand, rather than the annoying stinging sensation coming from your earlobes.
Sound and additional features
Looking at battery life, Logitech claims the G733 will keep fighting for 28 hours on a single charge with the LED lights turned off, which is quite accurate. You’re looking at about 20 hours with the LEDs turned on. Bottom line, you’ll get a couple of days of play on a full charge which is a big bonus for someone like me who hates the schlep of charging wireless devices. The headset ships with a reversible soft headband (attached), detachable microphone, a Lightspeed wireless receiver (USB-A), and a USB-C to USB-A charging cable for easy charging on the go.
In terms of controls on the headset, there’s an on/off button, a volume wheel, and a mic mute button. The mic mute button can also be reassigned to do a wide variety of other functions. The headset comes with a detachable mic that also offers a few customisable features. The range features a bunch of playful mic covers that can be purchased separately, but the real fun is in the software that includes a plugin that allows you to tinker with a variety of EQ presets for the mic and to give you better customisable options.
The software is quite cool to play around with. You can record a sample of your voice within the software and then have it play it back for you on repeat while you toggle each preset to see which one you like the sound of most. You can also make custom presets. It’s a great feature if you play online often and want to impress your friends with your cool-sounding voice.
Speaking of sound, the sound on this headset is impressive for its price. You get a well-balanced, crisp and clear sound that truly enhances your gaming experience. The headset boasts Pro-G drivers and 7.1 surround sound, making them brilliant for first-person shooter or action games, and you can EQ them in the software to your liking.
The G733 headset is compatible with PCs with Windows 7 or later, macOS X 10.12 or later, or PlayStation 4 gaming consoles. Advanced features like DTS Headphone: X 2.0, Blue Voice, and Lightsync RGB are not available on PlayStation 4.
Should you buy the Logitech G733 Lightspeed?
I mostly dabble in management games with a few platformers thrown into the mix, so this headset is more than ideal for me to hear what’s going on around my virtual worlds in glorious and detailed stereo sound. I’d highly recommend them for newbie gamers or anyone who wants a really good-quality gaming headset at a reasonable price. If you’re used to using mediocre headphones for your gaming and want to upgrade and really spoil yourself with a reliable, high-quality gaming headset, then these are a great choice.
Bottom line: they feel great, are built well, feel very comfortable, and let you display your individual expression without compromising on technology. Coming in at a recommended retail price of R2,999, the Logitech G733 Lightspeed is reasonably priced for a wireless headset of this spec, and you won’t be disappointed if you do decide to splash out on these to improve your at-home gaming set up.
