Putting the ‘Glam’ in Camping at Old Mac Daddy’s Trailer Park [Review]

After years of working as an Editor and writer for…
If you’re an avid music festival attendee or just hate the idea of having to sleep within earshot of countless amounts of creepy crawlies then you have probably come across the term ‘glamping’ before. I happen to think that Glamping is the best thing to happen to ladies who can’t spend a night away from warm showers, hair straighteners and a fluffy duvet since the invention of the inflatable camping mattress. But, there’s a big BUT here, I’ve noticed that a lot of these so-called ‘glamping’ experiences aren’t quite what they’re cracked up to be. No longer will we be fooled by seemingly glitzy outdoor showers that have little going for them but a few extra sparkles and pink feathers hanging from the ceiling because we have found the ultimate glamping destination; Old Mac Daddy’s Trailer Park and I got the chance to check it out!
Situated in Elgin in the Western Cape, Old Mac Daddy’s Trailer Park is pretty much the fanciest trailer park you will ever see. A lot of its fanciness is owed to its incredible location; unlike a lot of other lesser-fancy trailer parks around the world this one calls a working apple farm its home. From your trailer and the other amenities open to guests, such as the pool, restaurant and outdoor entertainment you can marvel at the view of the Elgin valley below and what a view it is! Most of the trailers in this ‘resort’ are permanently fixed in a magical pine forest on the slopes of the farm and offer breathtaking views. The rest sit comfortably at the foot of the hill and overlook a pretty man-made dam.
But the stunning views are only the half of it because the world’s fanciest trailer park also has some of the fanciest trailers you will ever lay your eyes on. The brains behind this unique holiday destination traveled to the US to bring South Africans a more refined taste of the simple life; because if you’re going camping you may as well do it in a refurbished, vintage Airstream trailer! That’s right, thanks to Old Mac Daddy locals and foreigners with a sense of adventure can spend a night in an old-fashioned trailer decked out to the nines. But they didn’t just give them a lick of paint a fluffy white duvet no, they called in the big guns and asked local designers to collaborate on the interior design of each trailer. The result is a collection of ten trailer suites, two lakeside units and a Daddy’s Villa (a family farm house) each with their own unique design guaranteed to blow your mind.
We got the chance to spend a night in the ‘Love Cake? I Do’ Airstream trailer which is made up of two trailers (one big one for mommy and daddy and a smaller trailer for children) connected by a wooden veranda. The veranda overlooks the dam on the property and is by far one of the most tranquil places to stay. Designed along with the baking gurus from Charley’s Bakery the trailers are an interesting mixture of all things sweet and steampunk. I absolutely loved the finer details of the main trailer including the printers tray table housing vintage cake collectibles, barometer wall clocks, chandelier of trinkets and bridal cake toppers and of course the over-sized bed dressed in pink and white. The baby trailer next door is even more wacky and leads guests down the rabbit hole into a magical cake tin. The ceiling above the bed, made from gingerbread men and allsorts characters, is covered in the bright pink and white signature stripes of Charly’s celebratory boxes.
During the day we spend out time at the Old Mac Daddy Barn which houses the restaurant, entertainment area, children’s play area, pool, and bar. From here yo can take in the rather impressive views of the valley below while grabbing breakfast, lunch and dinner. Elgin is a great place for outdoor enthusiasts to hang out and activities include mountain bike trails, hiking, quad biking, water-skiing, canoeing, fishing and more.
The trailers at Old Mac Daddy are priced per trailer and are priced from R895 for two people sharing (including breakfast) and bookings can be made directly through their website or via email or telephone. Also, make sure you check out their super awesome website for pictures of all the trailers.
