Premium Coffee & Divine Patisserie Abound at Kahvé Road [Review]
I’ve always wanted to be one of those ‘ladies who lunch’ — dressed to perfection, sipping on a flat white, surrounded by shopping bags filled to the brim with designer goodies. Sure, it’s a long time until my ship comes in and I swap my plastic MRP shopping bags for the fancy-pants paper bags that you get at designer stores but in the meantime, I can fake it ’till I make it and Kahvé Road road is where I plan to do it.
With luxurious decor, divine patisserie, and premium coffee, it’s the type of spot frequented by stylish women ladies who lunch. Visit at any given time and you’re sure to see the place filled with well-heeled ladies re-fueling mid-shopping spree. While I’m not the biggest fan of shopping malls or restaurants in shopping malls, I’m willing to make an exception for oh-so-stylish Kahvé Road. Located in Cavendish Square Claremont, this premium coffee and patisserie emporium turns mall trawling into an absolute treat.
The chic eatery boasts a variety of daily indulgences from delicious gourmet taste combinations to a host of premium coffee blends and other specialty drinks to delight the senses. Love brunch? Pop in for all-day breakfast and tuck into dishes like the famous eggs Benedict (which is said to be life-changing). Served on a croissant with a perfectly poached egg and Hollandaise sauce with your choice of cured lamb, smoked salmon or fried garlic chilli spinach, it’s the perfect power food before a shopping spree. If you’re looking for a mid-day treat then you’ll want to check out the lunch menu featuring delights like the much raved about Butter Chicken Curry or the super popular trio of sliders which includes a coriander lamb, crumbed chicken and harissa falafel slider, served with a tasty garlic mayo dip.
I popped in for lunch on a chilly Friday afternoon and decided on the Creamy Mushroom Risotto (made with white mushrooms and shiitake mushrooms garnishes with grated Karoo Crumble and rocket – R75) with a mini house salad on the side (R26). Beautifully creamy, devilishly cheesy, and bursting with rich mushroom flavours, this risotto was beyond moreish. It proved to the perfect cold weather treat and pairing it with a side salad made for a great combination as the freshness of the salad helped to break the richness of the risotto.
Of course, I couldn’t walk past Kahvé Road’s impressive display of patisserie and not order dessert. I opted for a Strawberry Tart with Mascarpone Cream. This fresh fruity dessert really hit the spot after my rich risotto and I was surprised at how light it was. Not overly sweet or heavy this tart was indeed a thing of beauty. Not only was it breathtakingly pretty in its design but the tart was the perfect combination of pastry, fruit, and cream. I’m a massive strawberry lover so this tart was indeed heaven on a plate for me and now, weeks later, I am still salivating at the thought of tasting this delicious treat again. If you don’t have space for a big dessert then try one of the delicious macarons as an after lunch treat with a cup of coffee or tea.
Kahvé Road is known for its coffee so I also made sure to try one of the eateries unique beverages during my meal. Perfectly roasted under the most precise conditions, the coffee at Kahvé Road is like no other, it’s a complete experience. Stop by and sample the signature Petra house-blend which is a medium light roast and has aromas of caramelised berries. The great news is, you can also buy your favourite coffee to go as the eatery sells a selection of coffee capsules and beans in store as well as online through the Kahvé Road website website.
