5 Places to Pick Your Own Fruit in Cape Town!

Nothing beats the experience of picking your own fruit … and then pigging out on it at home later. Luckily for us there are loads of places in the greater Cape Town and Western Cape area that allow you to enjoy the fruits of your own labour. Keep in mind that these posts offer fruit picking on a seasonal basis but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get out the calendar and save the date! Here are 5 places to pick your own fruit in Cape Town.

1. Polkadraai Strawberry Farm – Strawberries

This much-loved strawberry farm is both a kids’ and adults’ paradise! Set amongst the beautiful backdrop of the Stellenbosch Valley, Polkadraai Strawberry Farm allows you to wonder down rows and rows of scrumptious ready-to-pick strawberries and pick the most delicious looking ones to take home. Just choose a container size of your choice and pick to your heart’s content. Strawberry picking is available daily from October to December, 9:00 – 16:00. Prices for containers range from R30 for a 800g sized Junior Picker container to R170 for a 6.5Kg Ultimate Picker container. The spot also offers a range of other activities for kids so you can stay a while and enjoy the atmosphere while the kids play.

2. Klondyke Cherry Farm – Cherries

If you’re all about ending your day with a cherry on top then a visit to Klondyke Cherry Farm near Ceres is a must. Spend a few hours in the cherry fields picking the most beautiful, and delicious fresh cherries and then end off the festivities with a quiet picnic under the pine trees. Here the children can run around and play for hours while you snack on some yummy treats in your picnic basket (just don’t forget to bring your own basket and goodies!) Cherry season runs from end of November till the first week of January each year and the farm is open 7 days a week from 08:30 – 16:30 for cherry picking. There is an entry fee of R20 per person for day visitors and children 1-5 years are free. Cherry picking is charged at R50 per KG.

3. Wildebraam Berry Estate – Blackberries and Youngberries

Spend the day in this stunning valley just outside Swellendam, and get ready for a ‘berry’ good time. Spend a few hours picking your own berries in season and then relax with your picnic baskets absorbing the countryside serenity. The farm is open every Monday to Friday 08:00 – 17:00 and Saturdays 09:00 – 16:00 during season from November to Mid December. Berries are charged for at a per kilogram price and there is a small, per person entry fee for the farm. The farm also sells a wide range of delicious liqueurs (including Youngberry, Rooibos and Honey liquor) as well as liqueured fruits, jams, dessert syrups, chutneys, relishes, pickles and other items. You can also spend a while in the farm’s tasting room sampling all their wares.

4. De Krans Wine Cellars – Apricots and Grapes

Situated along the upper reaches of the picturesque Gamka River Valley near Calitzdorp, De Krans Wine Cellar is the ideal destination for families and wine lovers. Visit the farm for a spot of wine tasting and spend some time picking your own apricots and Hanepoot grapes in season. From the end of November to early December the farm welcomes guests to come through and pick their own apricots. Yellow cling peach picking takes place from mid to end December and grape picking in February and March each year. Visitors are welcome to bring their own containers or alternatively containers can be purchased at De Krans and fruit picked is charged at a per kilogram rate.

5. Mooiberg Strawberry Farm – Strawberries

Yes, yes another Strawberry farm in Stellenbosch but this one is equally as special. With strawberry fields dating back to the 1900s, Mooiberg Strawberry farm is steeped in history. Spend a few quiet hours in the strawberry fields and then get your bounty weighed before temptation builds and you eat it all right there and then. Strawberry picking can be done on Saturdays, Sundays and Public holidays from 09:30 – 14:30 from October to December every year. The fields are also open daily during the December holidays. Strawberries are priced per kilogram.
