Hold the phone … we didn’t think it was possible but good old fashioned ice cream in a cone just got so much better! Yes, the rumours are true the dessert world has recently take the simple wafer cone to new heights but introducing the oh-so-decadent doughnut cone. This adventurous alternative to regular old ice cream cones is a cone made of cinnamon sugar-covered dough, topped with chocolate and stuffed with ice cream (made of cinnamon sugar-covered dough, topped with chocolate and stuffed with ice cream (drool). Now, before you think this is just another crazy overseas trend that will never see the light in South Africa, think again because thanks to local eatery, Old Town Italy these incredible cones have hit South African shores in a big way.

The Durban-based eatery is famous for its delicious “cronuts” and now they’re stepping up their game by offering sweet-toothed locals a food trend like no other. Old Town Italy’s new “Conuts” are creating quite a stir in Umhlanga with this new treat which is said to be a modern take on a traditional Slovak cake and pastry made from grilled dough, topped with sugar and walnuts, called Trdelník. The trend was started by Prague café, Good Food Coffee and Bakery whose signature “Chimney Cakes” have been creating mayhem on social media.

But it’s not all about the cone; Old Town Italy is well-known for their scrumptious Fabbri Gelato in a variety of flavours. In addition to the ice cream and ‘conuts’, diners can also pay a visit to the waffle station and savour one of their “moreish” options while ordering one of our notoriously delicious milkshakes.
