Okracandle Unveils Candle Trends for 2025

Michelle and Erik Rust, co-founders of Okracandle and pioneers in handcrafted candle design, have unveiled their Top Candle Trends for 2025, emphasising their innovative approach to both artistry and design.

“These trends go beyond simply lighting a room,” says Michelle Rust, Creative Director at Okracandle. “There is a deeper connection between candles and our lives celebrating local craftsmanship, infusing homes with personality, and sparking meaningful conversations,” she adds. “When we identify trends within an industry we are so proud to be part of, we don’t just focus on the obvious. Instead, we look at how we can drive the entire industry forward,” says Erik Rust, Technical Director and MD.

Homegrown: Crafting candle moulds from South African soil-grown produce

Okracandle takes a pioneering approach by utilising locally sourced fruits and vegetables to craft one-of-a-kind candle moulds. “Each piece tells the story of its origin, echoing the vibrant heritage of South African agriculture,” says Michelle Rust.

Drawing inspiration from nature’s organic forms, the process captures the raw beauty of lemons, cherries, tomatoes, and other fresh produce to create unique candles that celebrate the abundance of the land. “The journey begins with the careful selection of produce grown in South African soil,” Rust explains. “Each fruit or vegetable is chosen not for its perfection but for its individuality — blemishes, curves, and irregularities are embraced as part of the mould’s charm. A textured lemon rind, a cluster of cherries with their stems intact, or the plump silhouette of a ripened tomato inspires exquisite designs that reflect nature’s authenticity.”

A recent highlight is Okracandle’s collaboration with the Oranjezicht City Farm Market in Cape Town, using locally grown tomatoes to create moulds that celebrate the market’s dedication to fresh, seasonal produce. “This partnership beautifully connects our candles with the community and the vibrant produce of Cape Town,” Rust adds.

Painter’s Brush: The art and science of colour theory in candle making

“Choosing and achieving the perfect hue is as much about understanding how we perceive colour as it is about blending pigments,” explains Erik Rust, biochemist and MD of Okracandle. The brand embraces the “alchemical” nature of candle making, pushing creative boundaries to craft unique and captivating colour combinations. “We’re excited to see even more innovative colours and hues in 2025!” he adds.

“At its core, colour theory revolves around the colour wheel — primary colours (red, yellow, blue), secondary colours, and the endless possibilities of blending,” Rust explains. “But for candles, the challenge becomes even greater due to the medium. Wax, dyes, and lighting all play significant roles, and the final colour can look entirely different when the candle is solid, lit, or viewed under varying conditions.”

Pick-a-Mix: The candle revolution; selling light by the kilo

We look forward to seeing more sustainable candle manufacturing and recycling processes. Okracandle revolutionises the candle-buying experience by offering customers the freedom to choose their own adventure. “Instead of wasting candles that don’t fit the picture-perfect mould, Okracandle celebrates their imperfections,” says Michelle Rust. This innovative approach allows customers to select unique, character-filled candles by the kilogram at R300/kg, fostering a more sustainable and personal shopping experience. The shopping experience takes place at Okracandle’s Warehouse Store, where customers can explore and handpick their favourites, immersing themselves in the charm of our one-of-a-kind collection.

“At its core, this practice isn’t just about selling candles. It’s about celebrating the artistry of human hands, the beauty of imperfection, and the power of sustainable thinking,” says Michelle. “So, next time you’re in the market for candles, skip the big-box brands and head to the Okracandle factory storefront. Fill your bag, embrace the quirks, and let the imperfect glow light your way.”

Candles: The ultimate conversation starters

“Candles do more than illuminate a room – they spark connection, nostalgia, and lively conversations,” shares Michelle Rust. “We’re constantly amazed at how our candle installations transform spaces, whether it’s a wedding, a dinner party, an event, or the comfort of someone’s home. The conversations they inspire often take centre stage, while our designs serve as part of the catalyst for those unforgettable moments,” she adds.

Blending Old with New: The art of timeless style

“Mixing modern pieces with antique treasures infuses your space with soul,” says Michelle Rust. “We’re excited to see more people embracing vintage shopping, seeking out interesting textures, colours, and designs, and blending them with contemporary items,” she adds.

Okracandle encourages the artful combination of modern designs with vintage finds to create a unique and personal aesthetic. As an avid vintage shopper herself, Michelle Rust offers curated recommendations for vintage shopping destinations in the Western Cape, including Memory Lane Antiques, Strand Trading Post Antiques, Odds & Ends, and Koöperasie Stories. These spots inspire customers to embrace this timeless design philosophy.
