Cinema Nouveau V&A Waterfront Gets A Facelift of Note!

Cinema Nouveau

For most film-loving Capetonians the Cinema Nouveau at the V&A Waterfront holds some very fond memories. It’s the place we go to inject a little bit of culture in our lives, a place to catch the latest indie films that might not otherwise make it to the big screen, and a place to meet with friends and family for a night out. For me, it was the sight of many a girl’s night with my favourite group of ladies so when I heard that the much-loved cinema complex was getting a facelift I could barely contain my excitement! And now, after quite a wait the new look has been revealed and all I can say is; “yowza!”

I got the chance to check out the new-look cinema, which opened to the public on 24 November, for myself last week and couldn’t believe the transformation. The now 3-story cinema looks like a completely different animal and is ready to offer a more luxury cinema offering to its discerning customers. With six theatres in the complex movie-goers can choose between a wide variety of art-house films ranging from the independent to the more big budget offerings.

The cinema also boasts a newly-designed foyer area with a self-service ticketing station and a snacks stand selling the usual popcorn and soft drinks. Head up the stairs and you will find a fancy pants new Nouveau Café area offering a delicious array of food and drinks, including bespoke coffee, cakes and organic chocolates, and a cheese platter for customers to enjoy before and after the movie. The menu will expand over the next few months to include a range of select red and white wines and craft beers, as well as gourmet café food items such as sandwiches, salads and burgers. I got to sample some of the eats and treats on the night and can confirm that the cakes are all kinds of delicious and coffees oh-so-good!
