New 500 Room Hotel Planned For Former Cape Town Tulip Hotel Site

The Tulip Hotel in Cape Town was recently demolished and while some were sad to see the landmark hotel on the corner of Buitengracht and Strand Street go, others felt it was time for the neglected hotel to call it a day. Of course, since the hotel’s demise Capetonians have been wondering what will pop up in its place and all has finally been revealed. This week Tsogo Sun announced that they have reached an agreement with the owners of the site for the construction of an exciting new hotel development and we’ve got all the details.
The new 500-bedroom hotel complex in Cape Town city centre will see Tsogo Sun invest a total of R680 million into the development and will form part of Tsogo Sun’s existing hotel portfolio in the Cape Town CBD, including The Cullinan, Southern Sun Waterfront and Southern Sun Cape Sun.

The new hotel will consist of two products in one complex, a 200-bedroom latest-design SunSquare Hotel and a 300-bedroom new generation StayEasy Hotel, offering a choice of affordable and stylish accommodation to travelers wanting to stay in the CBD. The complex will also house banqueting and conference facilities, casual dining restaurant Vigour & Verve as well as retail space. The hotel’s heritage façade will of course be retained in the new development.
Construction on the new development is expected to start in May 2015 and the project is planned for completion by September 2017 – just in time for peak summer tourist season.
