Netflix Announces African Animated Show, Mama K’s Team 4

Mama K's Team 4

Love it or hate it, it seems there’s no stopping the Netflix machine. With countless international titles on offer, the streaming service is now adding to its growing library of African content with its first original African produced animated series. Produced by South Africa’s award-winning Triggerfish Animation Studios along with British production company, CAKE, the new series, Mama K’s Team 4, is an exciting step foward for the South African entertainment industry.

But the good news doesn’t stop there, in addition to being an incredible achievement for South African film making, the exciting new animated series also features an all-female cast. The show follows four teenage girls living in the Neo-futuristic city of Lusaka, Zambia as they embark on an incredible, life-changing adventure.

The girls’ lives are tuned upside down when they are recruited by a retired secret agent who is dedicated to saving the world. Created by Zambian writer, Malenga Mulendema and designed by Cameroonian artist, Malcolm Wope, the series draws visual inspiration from retro 90s-inspired R&B and hip hop girl groups from the time.

The great news is, this show is just the beginning as Netflix will also collaborate with Triggerfish Animation Studio and CAKE to launch a continent-wide search for African female writing talent. Writers who have had their work produced for TV, film or theatre can discover more and apply at triggerfish.com.
