Liezel van der Westhuizen Talks Style, Trends, & Having Fun with Fashion
She goes by the nickname Giraffe but to us, she’s that fun, energetic and sporty TV icon that has stolen our hearts over the past few years. Liezel van der Westhuizen is known for her adventurous style and even more enthusiastic hairstyles and she never plays it safe, instead choosing to have fun with her various looks. When she’s not on radio, attending events, or shooting for magazines, she’s out and about cycling and enjoying her new hobby, roller-skating. We caught up with the trendsetting radio presenter to take a closer look into her wardrobe and find out more about her style inspiration.
What do you love about fashion?
The thrill of playing dress up every day really excites me. I work with fashion designer Stacy Robin on my looks for events and we even experiment with current makeup trends. Since working with her I get very excited about trying out new looks.
How would you describe your own personal style?
Fun and daring. I like to be creative with my looks. I love to incorporate my sporty lifestyle with my daily fashion, so making sporty looks more glamourous. I also like to play with androgynous looks as well. At the moment I am going through a stage where I change my hair colour to match my outfits. For the SunMet I will be sporting a purple hair colour with a 60s inspired dress designed by local designer Romanda De Bastos.
What do you consider to be a fashion no-go for women?
I am not a fan of peplum – why would anyone want to put emphasis on their hips? I find it very unflattering.
Who are your favourite designers?
I have so many local favourites! These include; Simon Rademan, David Tlalea, Rich Mnisi, Tokyo James, Craig Jacobs, Thula Sindi, and Ruff Tung!
Who is your style icon and why?
Fashion blogger, Chiara Ferragni because she’s very playful with her looks and she’s also not very predictable with the outfit she creates.
What are you doing at the moment?
My video blog, Giraffe in the City, is keeping me busy. My nickname, Giraffe was given to me by Craig Jacobs when I was modelling with my sister in a fashion show he attended. I am 1.8m tall and my sister is 1.87m tall, so he called us the Giraffe sisters.
When shopping for clothes, which stores do you go to without fail?
I love looking at the local clothing stores along Kloof Road and Long Street. I am always bound to find a unique piece at one of these stores.
What is your most treasured fashion accessory and why?
As a youngster I would always play dress up with my gran’s pearls – this is now one of the cherished items in my closet.
What is the most expensive fashion item you’ve ever splurged on?
A silver Armani dress.
