Heineken Launches Alcohol-Free Beer in SA
You may have noticed that the number of non-alcoholic beers available on the South Africa market has been growing at a rapid pace. As consumers become more health conscious, the demand for healthier, lower-alcohol alternative drinks has grown to such a point that big name brands are sitting up and taking notice. The latest big name to throw its hat into the alcohol-free ring is Heineken, with the launch of its own non-alcoholic offering, Heineken 0.0 on South African soil.
While you may think this new non-alcoholic beer is being aimed at existing beer drinkers looking for non-alcoholic alternatives, analysts are speculating that non-alcoholic offerings like Heineken 0.0 might actually compete with traditional soft drinks, rather than alcoholic beers. Of course, it was still important to Heineken that the product tastes like beer. Rather than take the easy route and remove the alcohol from a  regular 5% Heineken beer, the brand decided to brew Heineken 0.0 from scratch. The beer is created using only natural ingredients, helping to deliver the best-tasting, non-alcoholic beer.
Between 2010 and 2015, the European market for non-alcoholic beer grew by roughly 5%, but surprisingly the overall demand in the beer industry fell in that same period. It shouldn’t be surprising given this increase in demand that beer brands all over are trying to tap into this market then, and due to Heineken’s size and market exposure, they have an opportunity to give the market exactly what it wants.
Health conscious consumers will be thrilled to hear that this new beer is also kinder to your waist. Heineken 0.0 has half the calories of a standard Heineken beer, and approximately half the calories of your average soft drink – which means that if people are heading to a party, the healthier options on the menu are likely to be the zero-alcohol beers.
