A few years ago, South African shoppers had to say Goodbye to GAP, but as last year clearly showed, anything can happen! That’s right, fashion lovers rejoice because The Gap brand has re-entered the South African retail industry, and we could not be happier.
The American brand first came to South Africa in 2012 but sadly closed its doors locally a few years later in 2017. Thanks to a partnership with a Mauritian investor, the brand announced its return to South African late last year with the opening of a free-standing GAP store in Johannesburg’s Mall of Africa.

This first store is just the beginning as GAP has also announced plans to expand further in the coming months. South African fans of the fashion retailer can expect the launch of three additional GAP stores in different South African cities by April 2021.
The partnership between the GAP brand and Mauritius-based Hyvec Group promised South Africa that they have worked hard to ensure they will restore the trust and loyalty of the brand. The brand returned to South African shores with a welcome back promotion on various products in-store, which included a 30 percent off sale.

Various celebrities have collaborated with the brand recently, and in 2020 Kanye West’s partnership with the brand draw the attention of consumers and investors. West’s brand YEEZY has had massive success over the years and with the collaboration of the West and Gap, the brand stock went up by more than 30%. With this successful partnership, we hope to see some of the GAP YEEZY mechanise in South African and Mauritius stores in the future.
The Mall of Africa stated that they “are excited to bring in a brand that takes pride in creating products our customers love while doing right by our customers, community and planet”.
