Cape Town is a beautiful city with breathtaking natural scenery, diverse landscapes, and a range of outdoor activities to explore. While the weather may be cooling down, it’s no reason to stay locked indoors. There are still plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy in Cape Town during the autumn months.
Need inspiration to help you get started on creating your bucket list for the ultimate outdoor activities to try in Cape Town? Keep reading for 3 of my favourite activities to try this autumn.
Explore the Table Mountain hiking trails
Why not immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Cape Town with a hike up the iconic Table Mountain?
Hiking allows you to explore this city’s unique landscape, and enjoy its distinct fynbos and rich biodiversity, indigenous to Cape Town. Plus, you can indulge in incredible picturesque views along the trail.
Recognised as one of the ‘Seven Wonders of Nature’ and the ‘Fifth Wonder of the World,’ this geological masterpiece is a must-visit. Several routes around Table Mountain cater to various fitness levels. A full day would take around five hours to complete, and a half-day hike could take an average of three hours — depending on the route you take and the amount of food and water breaks.

Another great half-day hike option is to hike up the mountain, spend a few hours at one of Table Mountain’s mountain-top restaurants and bars. When you’re ready to leave, catch the Table Mountain Cable Car down to the base for an easy exit.
Mountain biking along the Cape trails
Cape Town offers a fantastic destination for mountain biking enthusiasts and is a great outdoor activity to explore in the Cape Region. There are many great trails to venture on with the broad terrain the Cape region has to offer. It keeps you active, improves your health and is a fun, family-friendly way of sightseeing a spectacular landscape.

Atlantis Dunes adventure
If you’re seeking an exhilarating outdoor adventure, the Atlantis Dunes offer sandboarding, quad biking, and thrilling 4×4 rides, making it a must-visit for adrenaline seekers. Our team had the chance to experience quad biking at Atlantis Dunes first-hand, check out the full review for an idea of what to expect from this thrilling activity.
Located near the scenic coastal landscape of the Western Cape, around 45km from Cape Town city centre. The Dunes is an important conservation area that protects the Atlantis Aquifer and showcases Cape Town’s diverse flora and fauna.

Other than adventurous activities, the site showcases a visually striking backdrop for photography, sunbathing, as well as picnicking. Regardless of your activities — this is a memorable experience suitable for the whole family to enjoy.
A walk-in visit to the reserve is free but if you’re there to participate in any activities like sandboarding, 4×4 excursions, or quadbiking, then a fee may apply. Before planning the visit, I recommend researching the entry regulations, as permits and an entry fee might have changed.
For more information, visit the City of Cape Town website and the Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve webpage.
