4 Beyond Decadent Desserts You Have to Try When Visiting Cape Town

After years of working as an Editor and writer for…
Today I’m going full-tilt on the dessert front and bringing you 5 drool-worthy eats and treats you have to try before you die … or leave Cape Town. If you’re holidaying in the Mother City or live here and want to go on a little dessert adventure then keep reading because boy, have I got a goodie for you! Today’s sweet finds are the best of the best and you can’t go anywhere before you try at least one of them – but seriously, try them all because life is too short not to gorge on fabulous dessert! So, with further ado, here is my list of top 4 beyond decadent desserts you have to experience when in Cape Town.
1. Cake, Cake, Cake!
We all love a bit of cake and My Sugar in Sea Point is taking cake to the next level with their oh-so-moreish cake jars. You can’t even look at these cake jars without getting a toothache but who cares! The great news is; there’s a whole family of cake jars for you to choose from including the Chocolate Cake Jar (moist chocolate cake drizzled in salted caramel and dark chocolate ganache, brownie bits, our pretzel bark and toasted marshmallow fluff) and the Apple-Pecan Cake Jar (soft apple and cinnamon cake topped with roasted apple pieces, caramelized pecan nuts and cinnamon buttercream). The dynamic duo who own My Sugar has promised that there are loads more cake jar flavours to come as well as more inventive and crazy things to delight your taste buds.
For more information on My Sugar visit their website or say Hi to My Sugar on Facebook.
2. You Scream, I Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream
Ice cream sandwiches take me back to a childhood spent holidaying by the beach in Hermanus but trust me when I say; we didn’t have ice cream sandwiches like this growing up! Local bakers and ice cream makers, Cookies & Cream have taken this childhood favourite and made it beyond fancy pants. No really, just look at, it’s beautiful! These ice cream sarmies come in a variety of flavours and are made with a generous dollop of homemade, small-batch ice cream gently pressed between two fresh, chewy, homemade cookies. Choose from delights like Coconut Lime & Sugar Cookie, Peanut Butter & Vanilla, Chocolate & Vanilla and so much more.
Place your orders via their Cookies & Cream Facebook page or find them at various markets around Cape Town.
3. Simply the Best Cupcakes in Town
Forget Charly’s Bakery; I’ve found the best cupcakes in Cape Town at Maison Gateau. These baked delights are too wonderful for words and once you get your hands on one you won’t be able to resist stuffing the whole thing in your mouth all at once (I know I couldn’t). Choose from flavours like the Candied Bacon & Banana cupcake (a soft banana cupcake with honey & cinnamon Italian buttercream and a sprinkle of salty, sweet, sticky candied bacon chips) and the Snickers (rich, moist Devil’s Food Cake with a peanut & salted caramel center, a fluffy Italian Meringue top and a sprinkle of peanut brittle for good measure), a much more.
Find them at shop 1, Mason’s Press, 7 Ravenscraig Road, Woodstock, Cape Town. For up-to-date info on new additions to their menu say Hi to Centerpiece Cakes on Facebook or visit the Maison Gateau website.
4. In and Around My Mouth
We’ve all heard about the Cronut but have you heard about the doughssant? The doughssants from Jason’s Bakery on Bree Street are Cape Town’s answer to the New York hybrid but trust me; this isn’t just another carbon copy. These little numbers combine the deliciousness of the classic croissant and the decadence of a doughnut, and contain a variety of toppings and fillings to make it the best thing you will ever put in your mouth. Jason’s doughssants have become somewhat legendary in Cape Town and your life just wouldn’t be complete before you have one in and around your mouth. The flavours change every week and with mad flavours like Belgian Waffle, Salted Caramel, Strawberries & Cream and Blueberry & Dark Chocolate Ganache, there’s no way you can miss out.
The doughssants are only available on Saturdays and are baked in limited quantities so get there early to make sure you don’t miss out! The bakery announces each week’s flavour on Twitter on a Friday afternoon so you know what to look forward to. For more info on these sweet treats follow Jason’s Bakery on Twitter.
