Cape Town Unveils Breathtakingly Beautiful New West Coast Cycling Route

If you love nothing more than hitting Cape Town’s open roads on your bicycle, then you’re in luck! The City of Cape Town has just unveiled its latest cycling infrastructure: a wonderfully scenic 5.85km route between Bloubergstrand and Melkbos. So grab your bike and get ready for a stellar ride this weekend because this is one route you don’t want to miss out on.
This dedicated cycling lane along the M14 is 3 metres wide, giving room for cycling traffic, and is also barriered from other vehicles by a curb, ensuring safety and security during your journey. The dual-lane path passes some of Cape Town’s most popular surfing beaches and has an iconic, sweeping view of Robben Island to Table Mountain – keen Instagrammers are sure to love the photo opportunities along the way!
The small town feel of Melkbos retains a West Coast village atmosphere even with SA’s only nuclear power station situated close by in Koeberg. Shielded from encroaching developments due to its proximity to the power station, Melkbos’ breezy environment can now be enjoyed by cycling through. Bloubergstrand boasts incredible views of the ocean, as well as a variety of eateries to enjoy when you’re done with your cycle.
In summer, the Blouberg-Melkbos area is one of the world’s most popular windsurfing and kitesurfing spots so you might want to avoid the path during this time. From December to March, early morning journeys are best for the M14 cycle lane.
