Vegan, vegetarian and even flexitarian lifestyles have become increasingly popular in South Africa over the last few years as consumers look to lead a more balanced life. While some South Africans who have adopted a plant-based diet choose to avoid meat altogether, there are still those who choose to balance their week’s meals with meat and non-meat-based dishes — essentially following what has become commonly known as a ‘flexitarian’ diet – and Burger King South Africa is here to support that with a few exciting new additions to its menu.

If you’re looking to cut back on the amount of meat you consume, then you’ll be thrilled to know that Burger King South Africa has just announced the introduction of the plant-based Whopper, Vegan Royale and Vegan Nuggets to its South African restaurants. Burger King says these new additions to the menu contain all the authentic Burger King flavour, but with 0% meat and 100% plant-based ingredients.

Ezelna Jones, Group Marketing Executive at Burger King South Africa, explains that Burger King believes in giving its guests choice, which is why it wants to be the global leader in plant-based alternatives in the quick-service restaurant industry. “Our aim is to offer vegan, vegetarian, and plant-based alternatives that do not compromise on flavour or price. Why should it? By working with partners such as The Vegetarian Butcher and securing endorsements from industry leaders like V-Label, which is administered by ProVeg international, we know we can create the industry’s leading vegan and vegetarian recipes to truly bring BK to you Your Way.”

In addition to the three new menu items, meals can also be accompanied by two dip pots for nuggets (Fiery & BBQ), fries and Pepsi – all 100% vegan choices that have been endorsed by V-Label.

“V-Label [administered by ProVeg SA] is proud to have been involved with the vegan endorsement of Burger King’s new vegan menu options. We see this initiative as more than a trend and applaud Burger King’s shift towards providing new and existing customers with more sustainable, and ultimately – in our opinion – tastier options.” – Donovan Will, Country Director ProVeg SA, V-Label.

“Burger King now has something for everyone. Whether you’re a meat-lover, vegan, vegetarian or flexitarian, there’s a great meal on our menu just for you,” Jones concludes.

Plant-based Whopper:

0% beef, 100% Whopper. Burger King says it’s hard to tell the difference, between the classic Whopper and its plant-based sibling. The Plant-based Whopper features a plant-based patty, flame-grilled just like the classic Whopper, so you get that same irresistible flame-grilled flavour you know and love. Just like the classic Whopper, it’s also loaded with crisp fresh lettuce, freshly sliced tomatoes, onion, pickles, mayo and ketchup on a toasted sesame seed bun.

The Plant-based Whopper patty is vegan, with the main ingredient being Soy protein, Wheat protein and Wheat starch, it contains no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. It’s also non-GMO and has no cholesterol. However, they do cook it on the same grill as the Burger King beef Whopper patty, and they also use the standard mayonnaise on the Plant-based Whopper, which contains eggs and dairy. This means the Plant-based Whopper is not vegan nor vegetarian, but it is a great flexitarian option.

Vegan Royale:

O% chicken, what the cluck? Made with the perfect blend of soy and wheat protein, plus a perfect mix of spices, Burger King’s plant-based patty is packed with flavour, texture and crunch. Top it with shredded lettuce and creamy vegan mayonnaise on a sesame seed bun and you’ve got the Burger King Vegan Royale.

Vegan Nuggets

0% Chicken. Still clucking good! These plant-based nuggets are tender and juicy on the inside, and super crispy on the outside. Each bite-sized BK Vegan Nugget is totally meat-free and coated in a flavourful batter. They’re pretty much a perfect match for dipping in Burger King’s delicious vegan BBQ dipping sauce.

Meat lovers, earth lovers, and animal lovers, this one’s for you. The nuggets are made of soy protein and wheat protein, with natural flavouring, and are free from artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. According to Burger King SA, the nuggets provide a soft and meat-like texture with 100% BK flavour which means maximum taste. The BK Vegan Nuggets are 100% vegan and endorsed by V-Label, with the nuggets being cooked in a dedicated fryer that contains no traces of animal products.
