Bertus Basson to Open New Restaurant, Eike, Celebrating SA Cuisine

Well-known local chef, Bertus Basson already has a finger in numerous well-baked pies in the Western Cape winelands. His restaurants Spek & Bone, Overture, De Vrije Burger, The Deck at Hidden Valley, and Spice Route continue to bring in foodies with a taste for something different. But now, Basson is hinting at a new restaurant venture in the heart of the winelands to add to his already flourishing list of restaurants. Set to open in August, Basson’s new Eike restaurant will celebrate SA’s culinary heritage and we can’t wait to give it a try.
Located in a historic building on Dorp Street, Eike takes its name from Stellenbosch’s moniker, ‘Die Eikestad’ and will no doubt celebrate all that Stellies has to offer as well as the rest of South Africa. Offering seating for just 30 diners, with a fixed dinner menu only. this new concept restaurant will be all about keeping it local.
The dishes will be totally inspired by South Africa’s different food regions and we’re hoping to see all sorts of local delights on offer. Perhaps a new take on a classic bobotie or malva pudding with a twist? With the menu still under wraps, Bertus has revealed that Kyle du Ploy (from Overture) will be running the kitchen and Nyaradzo Taguzu will curate a 100 percent local wine list for guests to enjoy.
Reservations are currently available here. For more information say Hi to Basson on Instagram to keep up-to-date with what’s going on with Eike.
