With spring well underway and summer on the horizon, many of us have already begun the annual wardrobe shuffle, packing away those winter warmers to make room for a few lighter and brighter clothing items in our cupboards. But, before you splurge on a new summer wardrobe make sure you take a look at these refreshing spring and summer trends from Alia Motani, Creative Director at high-end online fashion store, BLU.

That’s right, flared cuts are back and are an absolute must-have this season. With a number of 70s-inspired trends having graced the catwalks through winter, palazzo pants are a great addition to any summer wardrobe. Bell sleeves are also set to become a popular silhouette among the fashionably fabulous, offering a sophisticated yet casual and relaxed look. Alia recommends adding a few boho accessories and stylish round-framed sunglasses to top off the look.

2. Micro pleats:

Micro pleats are already the most wearable and iconic fashion trend of 2016, and are a great style to fold into your wardrobe this season. Alia suggests pairing pleats with a loose-fitting top, strappy lace-up heels and an easy, wavy hairstyle.

3. Athleisure

With health and fitness becoming an increasingly important factor for many of us, it’s only natural that this trend takes its rightful place in the 2016 trends round-up. The athleisure movement is a continuation of the pop and street culture influence on fashion trends of late, and according to BLU’s head honcho of fashion, balance is key. A pair of crisp, white kicks paired with a chic blouse or a minimal t-shirt and tailored pair of pants is bang on-trend this season.

4. Off-the-shoulder and cut-out tops

Show off some skin in a sophisticated way and keep cool in the sweltering heat with the return of off-the-shoulder items, such as strapless or one-shouldered dresses and tops that drape elegantly and effortlessly below the shoulder. In addition, the cut-out shoulder trend is coming in hot this year, with both casual and more formal options to choose from. Pair these with jeans, shorts or some wide-leg high wasted pants. You can also whip out those winter ankle boots to go with one of these looks and tie the whole outfit together in an elegant and contemporary style.

This season, light denim in delicate and flowing cuts will make quite a splash on the fashion scene, as it translates from the structured, button-up styles we’ve seen in recent autumn and winter collections. Loose-fitting linen will also receive a warm welcome this year, and is a great summer addition for its breezy look and feel. Colour palettes will also feature lighter and more subtle hues, according to Alia, and will favour earthier colours and all-white silhouettes, as well as military-inspired colours such as khaki and soft greens.

Indulge your inner fashionista and get your hands on these must-have fashions to make this a summer to remember.
