So, we all know that Mexican food is pretty much the food of the gods. Just think about it though; this unique cuisine offers so much to love it’s impossible not to be obsessed with it. From deliciously spicy chilli poppers to flavoursome Nachos, Fajitas, frozen margaritas and more, Mexican fare is by far the best. Luckily for Joburgers there are now loads of new spots where hungry Mexican cuisine lovers can get their fix – from an intimate new spot in Linden to a trendy hangout in Bryanston, here are 5 new must-try Mexican restaurants in Johannesburg!

1. El Jalapeño – Linden

This relaxed, rustic eatery offers hungry Linden locals (and those who don’t mind a drive) the chance to experience delicious, authentic Mexican and Latin American at affordable prices. They opened their doors on the 4th of April and word on the street is they’re a must-visit of note. Located on Linden’s popular 7th Street, El Jalapeño offers a wide menu including delights like jalapeño poppers, traditional flautas and gorditas, tostadas, quesadillas, burritos, churros and so much more. As for drinks, diners can quench their thirst with a refreshing Horchata (a traditional Mexican rice drink made with coconut milk and a splash of cinnamon), frozen margaritas, and other delicious alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

2. Perron – Bryanston

Ok, so this one isn’t super new – Perron Illovo has already been open for a while now but the second branch in Bryanston promises to bring loads of the same Mexican flavour to its new home at Hobart Grove Shopping Centre. Perron Bryanston opened its doors on in the middle of March this year and already make waves in the Bryanston community as the go-to spot for truly delicious Mexican grub. The menu offers loads of authentic Mexican chow including Mexican street-food-style nibbles and starters, salads, burritos, tacos, tamales, churros, and more.

3. Salsa Mexican Grill – Fourways

Ok, we’ll admit it, Salsa opened its doors about 7 months ago but surprisingly loads of Joburgers have still not been to this killer spot. Of course, it is a very popular spot with those in the know so make sure you book at least a week in advance if you want to enjoy their delicious menu. With a rather large outside deck area, an extensive drinks menu and an outstanding menu to boot, Salsa Mexican Grill is the place to be on the weekends. If it is drinks you’re after then try one of the flavoured tequilas or frozen margaritas – they’ll knock your socks right off. As for the food, the menu is all kinds of fun and diners can tuck into a wide variety of Mexican dishes including burritos, tacos, nachos and more. The menu also includes a create-your-own option so you can create a meal that truly catches your fancy. And, for the health conscious diners out there don’t forget to check out the lettuce cup ‘tacos’ available as a carb-free option!

If you’re tired of Cafe Mexicho then this new Melville spot is your new go-to Mexican hangout! The spot opened its doors about 3 months ago and is already well known for its generous portions and fabulous decor. The menu at this spot is quite varied with everything from fish tacos and jalapeño poppers to pork belly soft shell tacos and churros on the menu. As for the drinks, their frozen margaritas are a popular choice as is the authentic Mexican tequila!

5. Baha Taco – Norwood

Locals in Norwood are calling this new spot an absolute gem of a restaurant and a welcomed addition to the Norwood foodie scene! You may recognise the name from some of Joburg’s most popular markets but now what was once a humble taco stand has transformed into a fully fledged restaurant. The new eatery offers a relaxed atmosphere where diners can tuck into simple yet delicious Mexican grub. The menu changes on a regular basis and each day’s delights are scribbled onto a chalkboard inside the restaurant. When you sit down you will be served a small portion of  nachos and salsa to whet your appetite before the main event – a delicious way to start any meal we’d say! Diners can expect to find dishes like chilli con Carne, chicken quesadilla, soft-shell prawn tacos, churros and more on the menu when they visit but no matter what you order it is sure to be yummy.
