5 Beauty Products That Saved My Skin On a Long-Haul Flight!

Long-haul flights can be stressful! It’s bad enough you have to spend 10 hours, or more, in a confined space with a bunch of inconsiderate strangers but add to the that the dry plane air and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. Yes indeed, besides testing your sanity, long-haul flights can also wreak havoc on your skin and leave you feeling bloated, tired and just plain gross when you step off the flight. While I can’t help with the inconsiderate passengers on-board your flight I can offer up some skin-saving tips by sharing my favourite travel products to use on a long flight so you’ll arrive at your destination looking a lot better than you feel. Here are 5 beauty products I can do without on long-haul flights and long layovers!

A cleansing mit or cloth

I have to travel with a cleansing mit or cloth. For travel, my favourite has got to be the Smitten. For lazy girls, Smittens are the best invention since face wipes! The reusable facial cleansing mitten is kinder to the environment and perfect for travelling as it cuts down the amount of product you have to take with you.  A Smitten can be used all on its own (without face wash!) to effectively remove make-up and cleanse the skin. Simply add hot water, cleanse your face and remove make-up at the same and time and you’re ready to go! When you’re done, wash your Smitten with soapy water in the sink, pop it back into its handy zip-lock travel bag and that’s it!

Smittens are available online here.

Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream Skin Protectant

This miracle product is a must-have when travelling! The legendary skincare classic helps to soothe, calm and relieve chapped, cracked, dry skin. I use this product on face, lips and hands (in fact it can be used anywhere your skin needs a lift). The gel helps soothe roughness, redness and minor skin irritations and during a flight, I am constantly slathering it on my lips and other parts of my face that are prone to drying out and redness. If you always suffer with dry lips while flying then this stuff will sort you out in a matter of minutes.

Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream Skin Protectant is available from Edgars at R425.

Africology Sleep Gel

Famous for its appearance on the pillows in the world’s best 5-star hotels and resorts, the Africology Sleep Gel is an absolute must-have for travellers who struggle to sleep on the plane or who suffer from jet-lag. This stuff is the perfect bedtime companion and can be used to induce a state of relaxation before bedtime. All you need to do is massage your temples with this lavender-infused gel and get ready for the sandman to pay you a visit. I massaged my temples with the product before I wanted to nap on the plane and would close my eyes and drift off into dream world in no time. It’s also a great companion for nervous flyers.

The Africology Sleep Gel is available from Africology stores as well as through the Africology online store. The product is available in 5ml sachets (perfect for travelling) or in a larger 50ml tube at R199.

These chewable toothpaste tablets and mouthwash tablets are the ideal travel companions. The minty Miles of Smiles toothpaste chewables contain cleansing kaolin and a triple whammy of minty goodness to keep your teeth in mint condition. Another winner is the Crème de Menthe Mouthwash Tablets. After brushing your teeth with a toothy tab, pop one tab into your mouth and take a sip of water to start the fizz. Nibble and swish before spitting out. You can also dissolve a mouthwash tab in a small amount of water and rinse the mouth that way.

5. A Facial Mist

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Miracle Hydrating Mist

Nothing gives my skin a pick-me-up like a great face mist! When I’m feeling dry during a flight I simply spritz and let my skin enjoy the soothing and cooling action of the misting spray. One of my favourites is the Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Miracle Hydrating Mist. This instantly invigorating facial spray hydrates, soothes and refreshes skin with just one spritz and will soon become the first thing you pack into your beauty bag when travelling.

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Miracle Hydrating Mist is available online at R299.
