The wearable tech market is heating up this season, with some new products arriving to taunt our wrists and wallets. We’ve highlighted some of the most exciting you should keep your eye on in the coming months:

SAMSUNG GEAR S3

Price: €399 (around R6,460)

Samsung is taking a massive leap forward with its Gear S3, delivering a 16-megapixel full-colour display, Super AMOLED screen technology, military-level durability with Gorilla Glass, and Always On technology, which always shows the time rather than automatically fading to black. Even greater news is that the KNOX Tizen Wearable Software Development Kit (SDK) will also be available to third-parties, enabling customised applications for Samsung’s wearable ecosystem. The Gear S3 is available in two options to suit different users’ lifestyles: frontier (blends form and function with a rugged outdoorlook and feel) and classic (pays homage to the minimalist, elegant style found in the most iconic luxury timepieces).

Looking for something lightweight, packed with features, but requires minimal tinkering? Garmin’s new Vívosmart HR+ is an activity tracker with wrist-based heart rate monitoring plus GPS for extra running capabilities. It also tracks steps, distance, calories, floors climbed and activity intensity. It features an always-on, sunlight-readable display and water rating of 5 ATM, so it’s swim and shower safe. The vívosmart HR+ includes Garmin Move IQ, a feature that continuously monitors for periods of sustained activity. It automatically recognises walking, running, biking, swimming and elliptical training so users can easily track their exercise throughout the day without needing to start a timed activity.

TOMTOM TOUCH

Price: R2,499

The TomTom Touch is the first fitness tracker on the market that combines body composition analysis with steps, sleep and all day heart-rate tracking, right from the wrist. With the push of a button, TomTom Touch measures the percentage of body fat and muscle mass in your body to finally answer the question: Is what I’m doing, doing anything for me?  The body composition feature gives you a good understanding of your fitness level and how it’s changing over time. Until now, this metric has been available with dedicated scales or expensive technology, but the TomTom Touch now makes it more accessible to a broader audience.
